Be Still

One of my favorite verses in the Bible is Psalm 46:10 where God himself instructs us to “Be still, and know that I am God.” The reason it is one of my favorite verses is because it is constantly testing and challenging me. I have no problem whatsoever with the “knowing God” part. It is the “being still” that really gets to me. “Being still,” to my mind, means no activity or movement. If I am inactive, how will I be able to help God solve the various problems that I face? I know that God is all knowing, all powerful, almighty, etc., but can He possibly make the right decisions for me without my valuable input and direction? “Being still,” also implies the absence of anxiety and worry. I can’t count how many times I did, and sometimes still do, tell God I am leaving my problem in His hands and then continue to worry about the outcome. If I was God, I would probably be pretty annoyed at people who exhibited such lack of faith and trust. But, thankfully for all of us, I am not God,and the real God always shows us mercy and grace in our weakness as we grow in Him. Be still!
